Each persons comes to the WW Fenn speaking contest with a different opinion about what they are going to get out of it. Some might say it’s boring to sit there and listen to people talk, others might be waiting 365 days just to have that same experience. One thing is for sure, each person will have their own interpretation of what they hear that day. When I look back on my past experiences with this contest, I remember one speech in particular. In the spring of 2012, eighth grader, Chris Ruediger, recited Inches, a speech that changed the way I looked at WW Fenn.
My first few years at Fenn, I was one of those kids that thought it would be boring to sit there and listen to people talk. Now, when I look back on those years, I seriously regret not listening to the speeches and just talking to friends the whole time. After hearing Chris, when other people would give their speeches, I would think about his speech and how meaningful it was and because of that, I tried to listen to every piece with a positive attitude. That led to many personal lessons that I have reflected on at different points in my life.
